San Juan Chamula’s carnival is one of Chiapas’ traditional ceremonies which resisted the passage of time as well as political and social changes of the area. It is also known as K’in Tajimoltik in Tzotzil indigenous language, or “The Game Celebration”, and it retains several elements of the ancient Mayan culture. It is specifically related to the five “lost days” of the Mayan calendar. During five days of the Easter holidays, San Juan Chamula’s community gathers for a series of rituals, games, ceremonies, dances, and prayers to celebrate the end of a cycle while a new one sets in. On the last day of the celebrations, the ceremony of the bulls run is performed making the bulls go around the main town’s square, with the attendees trying to get on them in sign of courage.
